STAR is a wonderfully funny yet poignant musical comedy based on the story of the coming of the newborn king, Jesus, and how those who were seeking Him found Him.

Story Background

Just before the birth of Christ, there was a pervasive belief throughout the known world that a powerful monarch was about to be born.  Interestingly enough, this information comes from secular writings of that time.  Among those who were very curious regarding a new world leader were the Magi from the East (probably Persia, Arabia, or Babylonia).  They were the king-makers of their society, the ruling body.

The Magi were seekers of truth, searching for answers through not only astronomy, astrology, philosophy and medical science, but also through a form of Judaism; resulting in a religion blending elements of these contrasting beliefs.  It is speculated by many commentators that these Magi were descendants of those who ruled with the prophet Daniel and were, therefore, influenced by his writings and religious thought.  Most likely, they were also aware of the prophesy of Balaam which spoke of a “star coming out of Jacob.”

When the star appeared, these astronomers believed it was a divine announcement from God; feeling that He had broken into His own unvarying order with this supernatural light.  Based on that revelation, the Magi left with a large entourage for the land of Israel.  It should be noted that the Magi traveled to Israel on faith, since the star disappeared two years before, as they left on their journey.  This is why they had to inquire in Jerusalem as to where the newborn King was to be found.  It also explains their great joy at the reappearance to the star (Matthew 2:9).

And so the King of Kings began His life on earth as the object of adoration and worship by earthly rulers.  Certainly these Magi are great examples to us of responding to the revelation God has given us in His word and through His Son, Jesus
